Vaping has always had its share of sceptics. But, scepticism is good. It brings the truth out. While the positive health benefits of vaping have been well-established, its possible negative effects have always been a matter of a rather heated debate. The absence of any reliable scientific study on the negative health effects of vaping made the entire discussion more polarized over time. Until now, that is. A long-term study by world-renowned researchers has finally put to rest this discussion once and for all. The skeptics as well as vapers can now breathe a sigh of relief, as they have irrefutable scientific evidence to have an informed discussion.

Study on E-cigarettes

The research team, led by Dr. Riccardo Polosa, and comprising of researchers from the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of Catania (Italy) monitored a group of young people over a period of 3.5 years. Their research and its findings were published in the esteemed scientific journal, Nature, which is one of the most respected scientific journals in the world.

Heart rate
Respiratory symptoms
Blood pressure
Body weight
Lung function
HRCT of lungs
Exhaled carbon monoxide
Exhaled nitric oxide

There were absolutely no signs of any ill-health effects observed on the respiratory system of the participants in the study. The participants exhibited no deteriorating health symptoms on any of the parameters considered in the study. There was no worsening lung function, no development of respiratory problems, no changes in the parameters that indicate lung inflammation, and even HRCT results showed no signs of early lung damage. This was true even in the case of the heaviest e-cigarette users.

Only never-smokers were chosen for the study, because if any negative health effects were observed, it would be impossible to distinguish between the effects caused by the previous years of smoking and those caused by the present e-cigarette usage. The fact that the non-smokers exhibited no negative effects provides an unprecedented insight into the potential health risks associated with e-cigarette use. There are none. It firmly puts a lid on any skepticism against vaping. Now, the skeptics who had been cautious about adoption of e-cigarettes can take a step into the vape world, safe in the knowledge that hardcore scientific data has confirmed that e-cigarette usage is completely harmless.

The study also throws up some food for thought for the policymakers aka the government. After years of opposing, prohibiting, and severely regulating the e-cigarettes without any evidence, they now have hard proof. Will they finally take the more rational decision and promote vaping as a solution against smoking? Perhaps, Gregory Conley, President of American Vaping Association, put it best in a press release, “If no negative health impacts can be seen from daily vaping among those who previously did not smoke, how is it ethical to continue warning smokers away from using these products?”
